Michael Seimetz from CSIC and i3M on his team's tasks within BoneOscopy

At the project’s third General Assembly in Ljubljana on 11 June 2026, the BoneOscopy partners took stock of recent developments and coordinated the technical work ahead. The meeting was hosted by Cosylab and provided an opportunity for the six consortium members to connect progress across the project’s different scientific and innovation activities.

The discussions focused on how the individual elements of the BoneOscopy system are being brought together, from detector hardware, electronics and simulations to bone phantoms, integration, testing and future exploitation.

In the accompanying interview, Michael Seimetz from the CSIC and i3M explains his team’s role in developing BoneOscopy’s primary detector.

Together with postdoctoral researcher Eva Montbarbon and several PhD students, the team is designing a detector to collect prompt gamma photons generated in the patient during particle irradiation.

A key challenge is that the detector will weigh around 100 kilograms yet must be positioned close to the patient and remain moveable. It will therefore be connected to a robotic system developed by Cosylab. The team is currently working on the detector crystals and procuring components, including a tungsten collimator that will account for roughly half of the detector’s total weight.
