The BoneOscopy consortium met in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on 11 June 2026 for its third General Assembly, hosted by Cosylab.
The meeting brought together all six project partners to review progress across the work packages and coordinate the next steps in developing BoneOscopy’s innovative approach for monitoring bone cancer during particle radiation therapy.
In the accompanying interview, DKFZ postdoctoral researcher Hugo Filipe Meles Freitas explains his role in establishing a validation platform for the BoneOscopy technology. His work focuses on developing 3D phantoms that reproduce patient-like conditions in healthy and cancerous bone.
In parallel, he carries out Monte Carlo simulations and experimental measurements to study the secondary radiation induced when bone is irradiated with particles. These activities are designed to evaluate whether BoneOscopy can track changes in bone calcium content and assess the potential of these changes as an indicator of treatment progress.
