LIP is CERN’s Portuguese partner and a reference for research in particle physics in Portugal
The Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas (LIP) is the reference institution for experimental particle physics and associated technologies in Portugal. Founded in May 1986 to exploit the unique opportunities created by the country’s accession to CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, LIP brought experimental particle physics in Portugal to a truly international ground and will continue leading this challenge.
With experience in simulation, detector development, fast electronics and instrumentation development for particle detectors at CERN, LIP will oversee the design and construction of the fibre trigger detector head and ASIC electronics, the synchronisation with CeBr3 crystals, and the complete data acquisition system (DAQ) for the BoneOscopy project.
Prof. Assis is a specialist in fast electronics and instrumentation of particle detectors. He and his LIP team will be responsible for the development of the beam trigger detector and the DAQ. Their work will be supported by LIP’s Electronics Laboratory and LIP’s Laboratory of Optics and Scintillating Materials (LOMaC).
LIP also plans to involve PhD students to work on the nanosecond electronics needed for time-of-flight prompt gamma spectroscopy. The aim is to evaluate the detector response jointly with the fibre detector timing response.
The BoneOscopy project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the Grant Agreement N 101185141, and for the Swiss partner from the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). Views and opinions expressed are, however, those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Innovation Council. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.
