BoneOscopy kick-off meeting: a new era in bone imaging research

The official kick-off meeting of the BoneOscopy project took place in Lisbon, Portugal, from 20-21 March 2025, hosted by LIP, the Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas (LIP). This first in-person gathering marks the beginning of an ambitious European-funded initiative dedicated to revolutionise bone imaging technologies.

During the first day, the consortium participated in a guided tour of the LIP facilities, the reference institution for experimental particle physics and associated technologies in Portugal. Founded in May 1986 to exploit the unique opportunities created by the country’s accession to CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, LIP brought experimental particle physics in Portugal to a truly international ground. The second day of the event, included interactive exercises, presentations from leading scientists, and discussions on the project’s roadmap.

A promising path towards transforming bone cancer care for personalised treatment plans

The two-day meeting set the foundation for collaboration between project partners and outlined key work packages, including:

  • Technical specifications and user requirements
  • Development of 3D-printed patient-like bone phantoms
  • Design and testing of advanced detector technology
  • Stakeholder engagement and communication strategies
  • Detector integration and testing
